The
UK riots were new phenomena on the streets of London last week.
After months of gathering information and statistics on why we
were subject to such unprecedented violence and unrest, David
Cameron decides after analysing all the statistics, which person
in the world is best to advise him of the mood of the British
mobs.
Taking into account the reasons why the riots happened, the deep
seated resentment of having a life without prospects, the poverty,
and many more reasons, Cameron concluded that the one person who
understood the British way of life, and the despair of the British
people who rioted, better than anyone, was an American retired
‘Super-Cop’.
Bill Bratton has immense knowledge of New York mob rule, and has
been chosen by Cameron, as being the best person in the world
to understand the British and the best person to advise the government.
If you believe that, you are as daft as Cameron… nobody
has yet started to analyse the few facts that are available, nobody
has got to the root of the problem, and nobody can suggest a logical
strategy to stop this happening again. All we know so far is what
we saw on television.
What the rioters did was wrong and they deserve to be punished,
but punishment without discovering the underlying causes of the
riots, will not stop riots happening again, unless the underlying
causes are identified, and coherent steps taken to rectify them.
Violence began in Tottenham on Saturday after the fatal shooting
by police of Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old black man. Family and
friends of Mark Duggan took part in a peaceful demonstration,
which was quickly over-run by rioters, believed to be headed by
London Gangs.
For the events that followed many causes for the explosion into
looting, arson and burglary, a list of the reasons, and comments
are available on the BBC
website.
What is clear from these riots is the almighty row between the
Police and politicians, with both sides claiming they were responsible
for stopping the riots. The police have admitted they made mistakes,
but they have confirmed it was their decision to increase the
police presence at these riots, not the government. They also
confirmed that the home secretary had no power to restrict police
leave during the riots, as she claimed she had done.
Cameron came back when it was virtually over, and recalled parliament
for a day to brief them. The only information he gave to parliament
was the same as we had all seen on television. He also chaired
meetings of COBRA. Some may say it was just window dressing, and
didn’t appear to achieve anything; others would say it was
a case of shutting the stable door after the horse had bolted.
The appointment of Bill Bratton appears to be a pathetic childish
swipe at the police. A typical knee-jerk re-action by a media
hungry politician. It gives the impression that the government
want to control the police in other ways than cutting their budget.
Cameron has now softened his attitude from the treat that all
rioters would be caught and feel the full weight of the law, to
a more commonsense approach by paying lip service to the root
causes of the riot.
The media have played heavily on the fact that there were children
there from ages 9 to 13 years old. Well kids of that age are going
to be watching and following the rioters, and if they find designer
‘T shirts’ on the floor, they are going to pick them
up. Of coarse these kids won’t have there faces covered,
why should they, but they will be caught on CCTV and labelled
for life as juvenile criminals.
