Nicolas
Sarkozy said “Britain will pay for this, and pay dearly”:
Sarkozy issued this threat after David Cameron used the veto against
the proposal of closer integration between the member states of
the E.U.
Britain was the only country which didn’t join the other
26 countries in the E.U.[17 members and 9 others] in an alliance
to try and correct the massive deficits, which has been threatening
the E.U, for some time.
This leaves Britain on the outside edge of Europe, and although
Cameron says Britain will still be at the head table, and have
an influential voice, most people are of the opinion that yesterday
was the first day of Britain starting to exit from the union.
Cameron failed to get protection for the “City of London”
financial centre, the proposed 49 regulations that Europe is imposing
on the city, and if Sarkozy gets his way many more laws will be
passed by Brussels on the UK.
The E.U. agreed stricter measures on member countries over their
deficits, but failed to address the main problem of where the
money is going to come from to bail out the bail out fund. China
and other countries expected to help, have backed off due to the
E.U. failing to attempt to put its house in order until yesterday.
Greece is the country worse off, with interest on their Government
Bonds at an unsustainable record high of almost 30%.
Back home and Cameron’s Tory led Coalition is now further
split over Europe. Many are complaining that Cameron has spent
too much repairing splits in his coalition, while he let the country
slip back into recession. The austerity packages, due to his lack
of positive government and leadership is expected to last for
the next 10 years, resulting in a deficit of £1.3 trillion
by 2015-16. Cameron’s abrasive manner has upset most of
the European leaders, as well as his own coalition members. Members
of the press are expressing the thought that now is the time for
somebody to bring the government down for the good of the country,
and let a stronger government in to build growth, instead of just
playing at building growth.
Over the last 12 months the UK trade with Europe has been increasing,
only time will tell if this continues as hostility towards Great
Britain by certain E.U. countries could prove detrimental.
The UK has a lost most of its influence in Europe, Cameron had
been publicly side- lined for some time in Europe, at the detriment
of Great Britain, the chance of Cameron repairing the damage and
regaining influence has disappeared. A change of Coalition Leader
may help, but what the UK and Europe need is a change of party,
a change of politics, and someone with a little bit of diplomacy,
common sense and the intelligence to get our economy working again.
Not much to ask, is it?
