About 12 months ago Apple lost a court
case prohibiting people unlocking their phones, and going
with a cheaper tariff, and allowing people to run third party
apps on their phones.
At the same time, Apple were
applying for a patent to collect and store customer information,
in order to wipe the phone clean, and disable it in the event
of it being stolen. Good news you may think:
well think again.
• The patent will allow
Apple to fit a microphone to the phone which
will work when the phone is switched on, transmitting the
information to Apple. Not important you might think! What
about when you are having negotiations with a client for a
new contract: it won’t take long before hackers work
out how to record the information as well as Apple. Do you
leave your phone on a bedside cabinet at night? Would you
like somebody listening in?
Is this really scary or not?
• The phone can take a
picture of you without you knowing! This information
will help apple determine whether or not you are the authorised
user of the phone. Apple will then have the option to disable
the phone. Apple will store
the biometrical image, really
scary when your wife or family use your phone.
• The phone can take a
picture of your surroundings without you knowing!
To help recover the phone in the event of it being stolen.
Apple will also know what shops you go into, what you buy
etc etc.
• The phone can take a
copy of your unique heart rhythm. And of course
store the information.
• The phone will also
track which websites you go on! And store
the information. Does this
sound really scary to you?
• The phone will obviously
track and record your phone calls and emails!Does this sound really scary
to you?
• The phone can also be
closed down if Apple thinks you are using
your phone in a way Apple consider ‘unauthorised’!
For instance if you use an unapproved third party app, [perfectly
legal] or if you remove the sim card.
•The Phone can record
the user's voice, whether or not a phone call is even being
made.
In the event of what Apple consider
an infringement, whether legal or not, Apple
will contact a ‘responsible party’. This could
be the phone’s owner, or possibly the police, or any
other enforcement agency, government department.To
recap, Apple will know what you look like, and your family,
it will know where you are, where you have been, who you talked
to and what you bought. It will record and store your telephone
calls, your emails, and your surfing habits. Apple haven’t
said who they will share this information with, law enforcement
agencies the world over will be queuing up to get full access.
Advertisers will pay a fortune for your buying habits, and
the insurance companies won’t be far behind them.
The hackers will make a fortune selling your information,
or using it for their own criminal gain.
