Camerons Openness

David Cameron told the House of Commons that he wanted an end to the Media having the ear of Prime Ministers in Secret Meetings.

In the spirit of this new found openness, Cameron proposed an amendment to the Ministerial code which will “require Ministers to record all meetings with newspaper and other media proprietors, senior editors, and executives. He wants the government to be open about it’s meetings with the media” These meetings should be published quarterly.

He was referring to the prestigious meetings he arranged, at tax payers expense, for Media proprietors and senior editors to stay at the Prime Ministers country residence at Chequers.

Rebekah Brooks visited twice last year to see the P.M. in June and August, others included ; James Murdock and his wife visited, Andy Coulson stayed overnight in March, 2 months after he resigned form the PM’s office, [The revelation was described as a “yet more evidence of an extraordinary lack of judgment by David Cameron” by the Shadow Culture Secretary, Ivan Lewis.]
The executive editor of The Times, owned by News International, Daniel Finkelstein and his wife also visited. The only non News international executive to pay a visit to Chequers was Lord Rothermere from The Daily Mail.

You might think that David Cameron is being open and above board, but you would be wrong. It is only those visits and overnight stays which are paid for by the taxpayer, that have to be recorded, all private invitations as personal guests of David Cameron, will be kept secret. That’s in line with Cameron’s election pledge to have a Fair Government.

He has suggested that visits to No 10 by the Media should also be recorded, but Video Conferencing with the Media will be kept secret, this is also in line with Cameron’s election pledge to have a Fair Government.

To be fair David Cameron had published his list of Media meetings, prior to him announcing the proposed requirement to publish.
