Breaking
news: Rebekah brooks
who resigned on Friday has today been arrested, by appointment,
at lunch time, and questioned for 12 hours, before being released..
On the 22 May 2010, we reported that Rupert
Murdock was one of the first visitors to Downing Street, via
the back stairs into No. 10 yesterday [18/05/10] to see David
Cameron.
David Cameron, in one of his TV interviews during the campaign
with Adam
Boulton of Sky asked if he would resist the power of Murdock,
if he got into No 10. His answer was yes.
Over the last 14 months, there has been a steady procession of
News International’s senior executives visiting David Cameron
at Downing Street, a total of 26 visits altogether, that’s
virtually one every 2 weeks. In addition it has been revealed
that Rebekah Brooks has been to Chequers twice since Cameron came
to power, and even Andy Coulson was invited to Chequers by Cameron,
2 months after he resigned, James Murdock has also been entertained
there. Of course this has no connection with the fact that Cameron
resisted the initial demands for an enquiry, and up to the revolt
by all parties in the commons both Cameron and the Culture secretary
were prepare to clear the Murdock take over.
You may remember Vince
Cable the business secretary, said he was going to wage war
on Rupert Murdock, and the take over of BSkyB would not go ahead.
He was publicly and privately rebuked by Cameron, and the responsibility
for overseeing the take over was given to the culture secretary.
Now it seems logical, that even if Cameron didn’t ask Vince
cable what he meant by ‘waging war on Murdock’, Vince
Cable would have used his evidence to rebut the private condemnation
by Cameron over the handling of the Murdock take over. As for
Vince Cable’s remark that, ‘he could bring the government
down if he wished’. His explanation of this must have really
worried Cameron.
So far the police have arrested and bailed 12 people in their
new investigation into the phone hacking, with more to follow.
Rebekah Brooks has resigned ahead of the Select Committee hearing,
she had admitted at a previous Select committee hearing that the
NoW had paid police for information.
In the states where the FBI are investigating hacking claims,
Mr Hinton,
chief executive of the media group's Dow Jones, said that
he was "ignorant of what apparently happened" but felt
it was proper for him to resign.
He is most senior executive to leave the conglomerate, Mr Hinton
was previously head of News International from 1995 to 2007 and
has worked with Rupert Murdoch for 52 years.
It is expected that James Murdock will be the next one to resign;
he has admitted signing cheques for police payments.
With over 150 subsidiaries already and the use of tax havens,
News Corporation pays only 20 per cent corporate tax in the US
as opposed to the normal 35 per cent. The Economist reported in
1999 that since 1987, News International had paid no net corporation
tax in the UK on £1.4bn profits. It has been rumoured that
Rupert Murdock may resign, and take up the position as non executive
President of News Corporation, in order to get control the whole
of BSyB, and it’s “free of UK tax” status.
