• Trunk runs are the same regular runs carried out on
a daily basis.
• Some trunks are short runs transporting finished work
from the manufacturers to distribution depots or other manufacturers.
• Other trunks are long distance, for instance collecting
parcels from several depots and taking them to a central hub.
And usually waiting for return deliveries to be transported
to the various depots. These are usually carried out during
the evening/early morning. Other examples are printed materials
going to finishers, news going from the presses to distribution
depots to mention a few etc.
• Trunk runs are usually run to a very tight schedule,
in order to keep production going, or enable deliveries to be
made on time, often a trunk will connect to specific flights
or specific sailings, so timing is always important.
• RFT use 3.5 g.v.w. vans for these runs, making them
more economical than larger vehicles.
• Trunk runs differ from
contract runs in that they collect and deliver to the same places
every time.
