What you say and do online
What you do and
say online can affect your job prospects and more.
Recruitment agencies who check out potential job applicants on
line prior to the first interview, reject 30% of the applicants
outright because of what they post on line.
You can boost your chances of getting that all important job by
a third, quite easily. All your public comments on Facebook, and
Twitter are automatically catalogued by the search engines and
are available when you search for your name online. To counteract
the negative image you may have built up, start getting more positive
tweets and post more positive articles on your Facebook.
Blogs are one of the best channels to generate favourable listings
on search engines. You can post them yourself, be
a guest blogger, or comment on a blog, or article. This is
also great to bring traffic to your website. Comments
Comment on an article you know something about, you don’t
necessarily have to agree with the blog, you can put your opposing
ideas in your comment. Be constructive and informative, no blogger
objects to printing alternative arguments and criticisms. Simple
comments like ‘Good Article’ or ‘Absolute Rubbish’
won’t get published.
Comment on blogs which interest you, or that will show you as
having a working knowledge of the article. T.V. and Radio Journalists
who have blogs and twitter accounts are a good source. Alternatively
your local paper will record your comments on their website, even
if they don’t print them. Alternatively submit an article
to your local newspaper. Comment on forums which interest you,
although these do not carry a great deal of weight.
Blogs
Create your own blog on Blogger.com
it’s quick, it’s easy, it’s free, it’s
a high page rank, and most of all it is owned by Google. This
is by far the best way of getting your name and reputation circulated
on the internet, and you can run more than one blog on this platform.
Write in the same way you talk to people, avoid foul language
at all costs. Again pick a subject you know a lot about. Your
content must be your own; you can quote from any sources you want
as long as you name the source and link to it. If after naming
a source you wish to reprint a statement, put the statement in
inverted commas ‘’ and name the person who made the
quote, and where you got it from.
Tips and Tricks
Use other people as rungs on the ladder! By that I don’t
mean cut and paste from an existing blog or article. For instance
this blog will end up on my site as an article, you could write
a blog about this article. If you started off by saying “I
read this article by Vic
Farron in which he explained how to get your name and content
noticed on the web. I would like to take this a little further
by showing you ...... and then write your blog. You have acknowledged
and linked to your source [remenber to insert the link]. By putting
the source link at the start of the blog, people searching for
Vic Farron will find your article and click on the link to your
blog. The search engines pick up your blog as the source, and
also index it under your name. 2 links for the price of 1, repeated
by all the search engines. You should also put links to it on
your Twitter and Facebook
accounts. Open an account with Bit ly
and use a shortened URL. Ideal for your twitter account, it will
post and share directy to your Twitter account.
Generate traffic to your blog
If you have a blog, and a website, you use your blog to create
traffic to your site. If you just have a blog, as on blogspot
or a blog on any other free platform [make sure there are no adverts
by your blog host] then you use your Twitter, and Facebook to
generate traffic to your blog.
Free tools
Use Tweetadder
to build your Twitter followers fast, and tweet your blog several
times using different snippets from your blog. Take snippets from
your blog and put them on your facebook, with a link to your blog.
Register your twitter account on Twellow
Use Pingamatic every time
you blog. Ping-a-matic will send a ping [your blog title and blog
address] to several blog Directories and Aggregators and it’s
free.
Finally at the bottom of each blog , invite people to follow you
on Twitter and Like you on Facebook. If you are using Blogspot,
you will need to write this in html.
